You’re Not Losing Yourself. You’re Updating

by Klara Ganter, Career Strategist

“I’ve lost confidence in my professional self.” A client said this to me recently.

She didn’t mean, “I forgot how to do my job.”

She meant:

“I don’t recognise myself anymore.”
“I used to be decisive. Now I second-guess everything.”
“My old career doesn’t fit, but I don’t know what would.”
“I feel capable, but I can’t explain how.”
“Every option feels wrong in a different way.”
“I’m scared of making the wrong decision.”

This is not incompetence.
It is an identity shift.

Motherhood changes your risk tolerance, your definition of success, your energy allocation, your boundaries, and most of all, your patience for what no longer matters.

And yet, you are often expected to operate as if nothing significant has happened.

The same ambition.
The same availability.
The same drive.

But you are not the same person.

Here is the real issue: no one teaches women how to integrate who they have become. Without that integration, many assume something is wrong with them.

They call it loss of confidence.
They call it lack of motivation.
They call it imposter syndrome.

In reality, it is an unresolved transition.

You do not need a confidence boost.

You need clarity about who you are now, what matters in this season, what you are no longer willing to tolerate, and what kind of career truly fits your life.

Confidence is a byproduct.
Clarity comes first.

Once that shift happens, you stop trying to return to who you were. You begin designing forward.

If this resonates, do not ignore it.

This is not a rare or isolated experience. I have gone through this process myself, alongside many mothers around the world.
